Some ABC’s About College Admission

Time to get ready for some Some ABC’s About College Admission. It is hard to believe but the child you taught to use a spoon, write their name, and put their clothes in the hamper (OK, still working on that) is applying for college. This process is grueling; collecting transcripts, letters of recommendation, and those essays! Trying to be supportive to a teenager under pressure isn’t easy. Remember that you will get through it. They will get through it, honest. So here are some positives about college admission.

You CAN get in! Nearly 500 colleges accept 75% of their applications. Roughly 100 US colleges are highly selective, which means they only select 25% of submitted apps. There are also hundreds of open admission colleges across the country which will accept all or mostly all high school graduates.

Decide rationally. Don’t apply for colleges based on rankings. Apply for colleges based on how well they fit the need. Harvard is a great school for Law but Loyola University in Chicago is well known for their Social Work program. Choose college based on how well they will benefit the degree you want to achieve.

More than just grades. Yes, colleges care a lot about grades but they also look at what you have done outside of the classroom. Earning the Silver and Gold Girl Scout Awards is a big deal. Showing a pattern of volunteering for the community food bank shows responsibility. Use the essay and interview time to showcase all of who you are, not just your numbers.

Remember that all of this will pay off in the end. The hard work and worry are just stepping stones to a much bigger and brighter place. The world is waiting. Go for it!!!
